Kick Start Your Metabolism Every Morning

Your metabolism is dependent on everything from diet to quality of sleep. Fortunately, there are things you can do to make yours work faster, and making them part of your morning routine can naturally boost your calorie burn all day long.

Four great ways to speed up your metabolism:

  1. Wake up with 16 ounces of water: Recent studies show that drinking about 16 ounces of water immediately after waking up in the morning can boost your metabolism by about 30 percent for up to an hour or more.
  1. Eat a breakfast high in fiber and protein: Preventing large spikes in insulin helps speed up metabolism. Avoid refined carbohydrates like white flour and sugary drinks (including fruit juices) and eat foods high in protein and fiber, like eggs, oatmeal or fresh fruit.
  1. Work out in the morning: This can help improve metabolism and burn calories all day. One study found that 45 minutes of cardio exercise helped to speed up subsequent energy flow for up to 14 hours.
  1. Incorporate strength training: The more muscle you have, the more calories you’ll burn even when your body rests. Plus, adding some high-intensity, bodyweight moves to your morning workout can elevate your heart rate and help burn more calories throughout the day.
