There is a very old saying that many of us hear as children: an apple a day keeps the doctor away.
But does it really?
The old phrase about apples is almost certainly true. Recent research, published in the BMJ (formerly the British Journal of Medicine), suggests that eating apples will keep you healthier and away from that proverbial doctor. In fact, the study, conducted by the University of Oxford, demonstrates that an apple a day may have similar preventative benefits to pharmaceutical drugs called “statins” (drugs that lower cholesterol levels) in terms of lessening cardiovascular disease.
The researchers used mathematical models to test how the old adage would compare to regular statin use, “prescribing” either a statin a day to those not already taking one, or an apple a day to everyone over 50 in the UK.
The amazing results showed that offering a daily apple to 70% of the total UK population aged over 50 years (22 million people) would avert an amazing 8,500 cardiovascular deaths! It happens all the time: science validates ideas that some people refer to as “folk wisdom.”
Of course, proper exercise, good lifestyles choices and nutrition are still essential to limiting the risk for heart disease. The researchers were careful to point out that they were not suggesting that apples are a replacement for statins, but rather were demonstrating the fact that even a small dietary change can have enormous health benefits.
